How I beat Cancer – Survivor's Guide (Cancer Diary XXVI)
What I did, What I've Done, and What I Will Do, in relation to that Cancer diagnosis.
This is all quite interesting to write about in light of the fact that my doctor wants me to take chemo again – but as a preventative measure. I don’t take it every day, but I have started again, sometimes. It’s gotten me back into a certain mood. Purposeful. Focused. Remembering what’s important.
I’m not a doctor, but I am a healer. More importantly, I’m a believer.
— Matthew David Walker Jones
While I like to tell stories and give my opinions, I will try to keep this a more practical article, with a less narrative approach – to talk about exactly what I did, and do, for a healthy life. Nevertheless, I am certain I will throw my opinions around here and there. But first a short story.
When I got into the clinic, the first thing that surprised me was that there were no dietary requirements. The oncologists said I could eat whatever I wanted. This was the first and probably weirdest thing that I ever uncovered from that experience. It only made sense – what I put inside my body must affect it. If not, why put chemo pills inside it then? Seriously, why the hell are there no dietary restrictions or recommendation by the mainstream clinicians? In my opinion, that is a huge problem.
What I didn’t ask, but I wish did, was if there were thought requirements. “Should I be thinking a certain way? Should I be positive? Should I be afraid?”. That would have been funny. They would have smiled. Almost four years after my initial meeting at the clinic, I don’t think it would be a stretch to say I’m one of the strangest patients they have. I literally sit there and rant to them about the power of spiritual belief, and how I manifested myself back to health, and about epigenetic theory, and the fact that the environment signals the gene.
Now that I’m here, healthy and alive –I definitely think know that the way you think is of vital importance to your journey in conquering disease and becoming very healthy. Your thoughts are the first line of information into your body. Food, drinks, sounds, etcetera – those come from the outside. Thoughts, they start from within.
Survivor’s Guide: How I Beat Cancer:
The role of human thought:
This is your primary medicine, but I will get more in depth about it after the first five state-sponsored treatments. The power of belief is what heals you. Belief, also known as faith, prayer, meditation. Call it whatever you want. It is the internal process of becoming familiar with the self, and with the intelligent force that exists beyond the physical realm, and to connect with that force, which is inside of you
But first – My conventional treatments:
Radiation: Five days a week, for six weeks. Thirty sessions. Strapped into that machine. Scary. That’s the photo above. Head strapped down. Can’t move. Always anticipating if I was going to have a seizure or not. Wow. I can say, that was an accomplishment. Not an easy thing to do.
Chemotherapy: Temozolomide, to be specific. I took 100mg five days a month for two months. After that didn’t work in the slightest, I started to take 10mg every day. I did that every day for at least 400 days. I started to wean myself off near the end. Once a week I’d skip it. Then twice. Then i’d take it every few days. Eventually my supply ran out. Can’t say I’m looking for a re-up. I usually got it in bags from the pharmacy in the clinic. They also delivered it by courier to my house. Funnily, the same older Jamaican guy who used to pick up the oyster samples at the plant for lab testing delivered a bag of chemotherapy to my front door. I chatted him up, and I’m pretty sure he remembered me. If not, he was super friendly for thinking I was a stranger.
Dexamethasone: It was given to me in order to make my brain stop swelling, when I was going through excruciating pain. It didn’t work well because I kept having to take more of it just to stay in the same place. And apparently it damaged my stomach lining. They gave me another pill to help with that. Thankfully I found THC oil which stopped the pain and kills cancer cells. It’s stuff like this that makes me cynical, or to be more kind, distrustful. Or weary, I don’t know. I mean, they wanted to give me one pill, which didn’t really work, then another pill to help with that first pill. Instead, I took an organic substance that helped better than two synthetic ones. And it killed cancer cell too.
Dilantin: This stuff didn’t really work. It’s supposed to be anti-seizure medication but I kept having seizures while taking it. That is not a good memory. The pills made me drowsy too. So I switched to Keppra.
Levetiracetam (Keppra): I have been taking this essentially every day for over three years now. It’s become a habit. I wonder if I really need to, to be honest. It’s become such a habit my internal clock shoots off when I don’t take it. It’s become a part of my subconscious routine.
*
Now that the boring “conventional” stuff is out of the way, let’s move on to what can help everyone, regardless of their situation.
“UNCONVENTIONAL” TREATMENT
Thoughts & Belief:
I have written about this quite a lot. But the science proves it. I can’t describe it all here quickly, but just look up Joe Dispenza. Neuroscientist, professional. Proven in published clinical studies. Your thoughts can make you sick, but they can also make you healthy. The placebo effect alone is proof that the mind influences the body. Your beliefs, affirmations, and self-talk matter. I wrote myself into healing—literally. I was already healed on paper before my body caught up. Reality followed thought. The brain doesn’t know the difference between vividly imagined reality and physical reality. So I lived in my healed state before I physically arrived there.
THC oil:
Not popular for those who don’t need it. But for those who do—lifesaver. For me, it was an anti-inflammatory, pain reliever, and appetite stimulant. I didn’t take it for fun. I took it because it helped me eat, helped me sleep, and kept nausea at bay. High-dose THC oil, taken properly, has been studied for its impact on cancer cells. Some say it induces apoptosis (cell death) in cancer cells. I don’t make claims. I just say what worked for me. And THC oil worked.
Diet:
Literally what you put inside your body. Fuel, information, medicine. Your cells are built from what you eat. If you eat junk, your cells are made of junk. I took this seriously. No processed food, no seed oils, no refined sugar. Whole foods, clean water, organic as much as possible. I focused on anti-inflammatory, alkaline, and nutrient-dense foods. Things like turmeric, ginger, garlic, greens, berries, and wild fish. I cut out dairy. I cut out alcohol. I ate with purpose.
Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP):
Thoughts have structure. Patterns. If you can change the way your brain processes information, you can change your reality. NLP is about reprogramming the subconscious. I used affirmations, visualization, and self-hypnosis. Instead of saying “I hope I get better,” I said “I am healing. I am strong. I am already whole.” Instead of replaying fear-based scenarios in my head, I practiced mental rehearsals of perfect health. NLP is what allowed me to break fear loops and install belief systems that served me.
Juicing:
Flooding the body with raw, living nutrients. I juiced daily. Greens, beets, carrots, ginger, turmeric, celery, lemons. No fillers, no sugar. Just medicine in liquid form. Juicing removes fiber, allowing the body to absorb pure vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants instantly. It gave me energy, clarity, and immune support when I needed it most. Juicing is like an IV drip of nutrition.
Supplements:
I didn’t just guess. I researched. But I did experiments. Free blood tests very often because I would return to the cancer clinic regularly to get check ups. For a while it was every week. I always had healthy blood. Apparently my veins are nice and big. Nurses have told me that with a 100% accuracy rate. Men and women. Anyway. Can’t let my ego inflate.
• Vitamin C: Intravenous and oral. Antioxidant. Supports the immune system.
• Vitamin D3 + K2: Essential for immunity, bone health, and inflammation reduction.
• Magnesium: Cellular energy, relaxation, and brain function.
• Zinc: Antiviral, immune booster, crucial for cellular repair.
• Omega-3s (DHA/EPA): Anti-inflammatory. Brain health. Cellular repair.
• Glutathione: The body’s master antioxidant. Detoxification, immune support, cellular repair.
• Curcumin (from turmeric): Powerful anti-inflammatory and cancer-fighting properties.
• Resveratrol: Found in grapes and red wine. Longevity, DNA repair, and anti-cancer properties.
• B Vitamins: Energy, stress resilience, nervous system function.
• Probiotics: Gut health. Because all health starts in the gut. Here’s a brief list. I’ll get into the longer version later on in the article.
Exercise (and Sleep):
Even when I was exhausted. Even when I was weak. I moved. Usually just as simple as walking. But sometimes, I spent lots of time lying down. Relaxation – just as important as exercise.
Walking. Stretching. Tai Chi. Whatever I could do that day, I did. The body is meant to move. Movement is medicine. I had one consult with a naturopath who told me herself — “muscle is medicine”. Movement boosts circulation, flushes out toxins, stimulates the lymphatic system, and releases endorphins. But honestly, I didn’t start lifting weights til about a year after diagnosis. Years later, I train regularly.
And sleep. I slept a LOT. I didn’t have any responsibilities. Not really, I mean. I guess I could have tried to work, or do something else, but… When you get diagnosed with cancer at the age of 25 – or any age, for that matter, you feel as if you have only one responsibility: to win against this thing, and to enjoy the process while doing it.
Laughter:
People underestimate this. I took humor seriously. I laughed as much as possible. Stand-up comedy, funny movies, memes, anything that made me feel good. Laughter reduces stress hormones and boosts immune function. It’s literal medicine. I made sure to keep laughing, even when things were dark.
To-do Lists & Goal Setting:
Sometimes as simple as a pencil and a piece of napkin, my to-do list for a day would be eat, drink water, step outside, laugh, talk, put my bare feet on the ground, read something, and write something. Just crossing out “drink water” from a to-do list was a dopamine hit.
• Daily tasks (write, read, walk, eat well).
• Weekly goals (appointments, treatments, projects).
• Long-term vision (writing, business, healing).
I treated my recovery like a mission. Checking things off gave me momentum. Every little win mattered. But honestly, I took it easy. A strange calmness that overcomes oneself when facing such an impersonal, grand force like cancer.
Socializing:
I needed people. Even when I wanted to isolate. Even when I didn’t have the energy to talk. Community heals. Support systems matter. I leaned on my family, friends, and mentors. I let myself receive love and encouragement. Healing isn’t a solo journey.
Electricity: EMF & Grounding:
This one’s controversial. But I’ll tell you this:
I felt better when I was grounded. Bare feet on the earth, unplugging from Wi-Fi, turning off electronics at night. Modern life bombards us with unnatural frequencies. Our ancestors lived in nature. I made sure to disconnect from artificial energy and reconnect with natural energy.
Grounding (earthing) is real. It reduces inflammation, balances the nervous system, and improves sleep. Try it. Walk barefoot on grass, dirt, sand. See how you feel.
EDUCATIONAL & IMPACTFUL BOOKS
The books I read were diverse. Some I read front to back multiple times. Some of them I just dug deep into one chapter on repeat and studied it. Some I skimmed again and again picking up tidbits of information each time. I’m going to go look in my bookshelf and find them all now. Every single one was a beautiful contribution to my life and my recovery. I am excited that I get to give back to the community with my writing as well. A full book will soon come of all of these cancer series that I have written.
I will put the books into three categories. The first category is books which are directly related to cancer and had a great impact on me,
The second category is books related so spirituality, health, and other strange phenomena that also deeply impacted me, but are beyond the scope of cancer alone.
The third category is books that aren’t related to cancer at all, but influenced me in their spiritual nature, and just having a special place in my heart for helping me during a time of great duress.
Now let me list them with brief descriptions.

VIDEOS + MOVIES + SERIES
EDUCATIONAL VIDEOS
I also watched at least 100 hours of cancer-related content. Maybe 300, to be honest. And then Probably another 300 hours of spirituality and mindfulness content. I watched stuff on repeat. I watched Joe Dispenza’s weekend retreat meditation seminar like ten times. I would fall asleep and wake up and it was still playing. I used to fall asleep in the living room with the stuff playing the background. I appreciate my roommates for letting me do that.
Gaia: The premium subscription was a life-changer. I don’t think I would have survived without it. It gave me access to Joe Dispenza’s 8 hour series was genuinely a life changer. Gosh, I need to watch that again. Just, too, too incredibly good. I’m not sure I can even recall every different series I watched on there. I’ll try to find them all now.
Here are some of the Gaia shows I watched. They all helped, while only some were specifically about cancer. Some of them are pretty out there but entertaining nonetheless. Some of them are specifically about researching cancer and interviews with doctors and survivors. I just want you to get the full picture of everything I did during that time to heal. Of all the things that I got the best ROI on, a Gaia Premium subscription was number one. Probably that, and THC oil.

Also lots of Gabor Mate. That’s important too. Zach Bush also.
SUPPLEMENTS
SUPPLEMENT LIST
*********
A long list of supplements is below. I have these all written down in a word document from three years ago, but I can't even remember if I took every single one. I recognize all the names, and I’m pretty sure I took almost all of them. I still have some of them, that I take now. There were times when I took up to 20 pills a day, on top of the chemo. Definitely not recommended by my oncologist. But hey, my tumour shrank from a walnut to invisible, so whatever I did, it worked. I spent over $1000 dollars on supplements over the course of three years. It seems like lot, but… if you had cancer, what would you do?

Wow. That’s a lot. But I’m not making any of this up. I used to spend an hour preparing a week’s worth of pills and distributing them evenly into silicon muffin-cups. Every morning and every night I would take them, put them in my hand, and take three or four gulps of water to swallow between 15-20 pills, tablets, and whatevers. I received $40,000 dollars from the GoFundMe. Your money went to a good place. It kept me alive. Thank you, beyond all imaginations.
JOURNALING
Journaling was, and still is, an intensely important process that helped me get through this experience. All of these articles, all of my substack posts about cancer – the seeds were planted back then. It’s not like all of this writing just sprouted up out of nowhere. I went for walks. Sometimes half of the day, I would be wandering around Queen Elizabeth park, just thinking. Thinking “why me?”. But not in such a tragic way. I mean really — why me? It’ hard not to get main character syndrome when you get diagnosed with cancer 18 months after your mom dies and you’re barely 25 years old. My thoughts traveled, expanded, crystallized. I put some of them down on paper. I typed some of them. But really at that time, the journals were short and personal. I never expected to start a substack. The only writing shared publicly was my instagram posts and stories. Those are kind of the first iteration of this blog. I will be doing more on my instagram soon.
I will try to post some of the ‘journals’ below. Some are personal, some are just manifestation lists. Whatever they are, they are pieces of writing that helped me get through tough times.
Sometimes I find journals by accident when searching through my computer. Journals, or whatever they are – that I wrote from way back then. The times of peak cancer. Still bald AF. Intense as hell. Here’s one I wrote. A manifestation list, I guess.
At the time of writing the below journal, none of this was physically true yet. It all came true in time… mostly. Notice I started writing it on Jan 31/2022. I began chemo in October 2021. This was just a few months after I lost all my hair. When I look back at these pieces of writing, which were only for personal use, wow… I am proud of myself.

I just copy-pasted that list from a word document. I can’t say I understand all of it. But wow, some of those things did come to fruition. Incredible. When I take the time to really dig into the fact that this did actually happen to me, or for me. I am shocked. I do not feel like the same person as I was back then. This is a new me.

I found another journal. Let me be clear: I never expected this to see the light of day. But I think it adds context to my story. Even though I want to edit it for clarity’s sake, I won't for authenticity’s.
6 months have passed since the doctors told me I have an incurable, inoperable ‘mass’ chilling in the right parietal lobe of my brain. I now know It’s a grade 4 cancerous tumor. Up until the day of diagnosis I had been running every day, about 40 minutes from my house to the highest natural point in Vancouver called Little Mountain. Only in the last few weeks have I been walking there again. Seizures are unpredictable and conclude in me suddenly waking up unaware of my surroundings, thus I was scared to go anywhere alone for quite some time. But, gratefully, due to medications (most effectively edible THC and CBD), I now have the confidence to regularly walk to my favorite spots . I had my most intense seizure while sitting in a Vietnamese Restaurant off the intersection at King George and Main Street. Seconds away from taking the first bite of my steaming Pho bowl, I felt that feeling of someone suddenly standing over your shoulder, tickling every inch of your skin with their hot breath – and not in the sexy way. Having seizures, and the “auras” that signal them before they come, is impossible to express with words. It’s something that has to be experienced first-hand. If you’re a real adrenaline junkie, just try having unpredictable seizures triggered by a brain tumor, and tell me you weren’t missing out. In the least elaborate explanation, an aura before a seizure is like feeling you get when you know you’re about to vomit. You’re aware on a higher plane that something is about to happen, but you’re so preoccupied with that sudden knowledge that you’re not even sure what it is that is about to occur. Physically it’s like electricity pulsing through the body but without the pain. Literally it’s brain waves radically rearranging their frequency. Personally, because of the location of the tumor, I feel overwhelmingly intense numbness on the lower left side of my face, going up from the corner of my mouth to my cheekbone somewhat like after a good freezing at the dentist, except electric. I feel the same numbness in the pinky and ring finger in my left hand. Both my left face and hand would twitch uncontrollably before I lost consciousness. I learned later that because the location of the tumor in my brain is difficult to access, only as a last resort would surgery be attempted, and it may leave my left side paralyzed. I woke up in a Vietnamese restaurant. I’d been there a handful of times before, but I was really too preoccupied and confused looking at the complete stranger sitting across from me. A Caucasian guy in his 30s, clean cut. It felt like one of those hangovers you only get after a night with a lost wallet or phone or a half gram of cocaine. It’s hard to recall what happened shortly after waking up, but the man across the table from me introduced himself as an acupuncturist named Neil who worked next door to the Vietnamese restaurant. The waitress had apparently stepped over my unconscious body and beckoned him over from next door. They called the ambulance for me and I began to recall what had happened before I’d lost consciousness. I had felt the aura, and began shaking with a feeling of my mouth filling up with liquid rapidly -

Well, I think that’s enough. I could add more of those old journals but… maybe next time.
I’m not sure I have much else to say for this article. I meant it to be more factual and less narrative, but, I really can’t help it.
Thanks a million times over to everyone who supports me on substack.
I love you very much,
and I hope to send you another post again soon.
Much love and blessing,
